November 16 Meeting Summary
On Sunday, November 16, we held a congregational meeting after the morning service to discuss the possibility of changing the name of our church. The Name Change Committee shared survey results, reflected on our long-standing legacy, and explained the meaning behind the proposed name.
The meeting began with Merri Post, who spoke about the rich history of our church and the responses from the recent congregational survey.
Merri emphasized the importance of preserving the legacy and history of First Reformed Church—honoring the people, ministries, and events that have shaped our congregation. She introduced the theme:
Stories That Shaped Us: Remembering the people, ministries, and milestones that formed our church family.
Our Community: Recognizing decades of ministry, mission work, and loving care to our neighbors.
Looking ahead, we shared plans to establish a History Committee in 2026, which will work on:
A printed keepsake booklet
A permanent display highlighting the legacy of First Reformed in a prominent area of the church,
A history page on the church website.
During the meeting, Jason Snyder shared how seriously the committee has taken this process. Many meetings, discussions, and much prayer have guided each step.
Shelli Menning then shared the heart behind the proposed name. The committee felt that we all need a little more grace—the gift God freely gives to all of us. We also appreciated the depth of the word covenant, reflecting Pastor Mark’s regular encouragement to pray for our covenant children and reminding us that we, too, are covenant children in God’s family.
The two name options presented to the congregation are:
Remain the same:
“First Reformed Church: An Evangelical Presbyterian Church”Proposed new name:
“Grace Covenant Church: A Reformed, Evangelical Presbyterian Church”
Voting Process
The congregation will be voting on the name on Sunday, December 7, immediately following the church service.
A 70% “in favor” vote is required to adopt the new name.
This meeting will be held solely for the purpose of voting on the name.
Voting will be done by private ballot, counted immediately, with results announced before adjournment.
Those who are eligible to vote, as per our by-laws, are active members 18 and older.
Absentee Ballots
Absentee ballots will be available beginning November 21.
Ballots may be mailed to snowbirds upon request.
All absentee ballots must be returned by 6:00 p.m. on December 6.
Two Ruling Elders and two Deacons will count the absentee ballots and keep record of who voted absentee.
On December 7, those who voted absentee will be checked against in-person attendance.
We thank you for your thoughtful participation, your prayers, and your ongoing love for our church family. Please continue praying for unity and clarity as we seek God’s guidance in this decision.
In Christ,
The Name Change Committee
