Scripture: John 4:23-24 (ESV)
"But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him. God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth."

A courtier can bow at exactly the right moment and say exactly the right words. You still can't tell if she loves the king.

Worship can work the same way. We stand when everyone stands, say the confession, recite the creed, and never mean a word of it. That's one ditch.

The other ditch says the words don't matter as long as we feel sincere. But Israel was sincere at the golden calf. So were Nadab and Abihu. Sincerity was never what they lacked. They lacked the truth about who God is and how he wants to be approached.

Jesus asks for both: a heart that means it, and a mind shaped by his Word.

This week, slow down when you pray. Notice what you're actually saying, then check it against what God has said about himself. The Father is seeking worshipers like that, and he meets them through his Word and Spirit, right where he has promised to be.
