Devotions | The Redeemer’s Kindness | Ruth 3
This Lord’s Day, we continued our journey through the book of Ruth by entering the high stakes and quiet tension of the threshing floor in chapter 3. In the message, "The Redeemer’s Kindness," we explored Ruth’s daring move—not of seduction, but of radical, risk-taking faith as she appealed to the character of Boaz. We saw how Ruth moved beyond the fringes of the field to seek full inclusion and rest under the "wings" of her redeemer, providing us with a beautiful picture of how we approach our True Redeemer, Jesus Christ.
If you missed the service or want to revisit how the integrity of Boaz points us to the kindness of the Savior who will not rest until our redemption is secure, you can watch the full sermon here: The Redeemer's Kindness.
The following five-day devotional guide is designed to help you dwell on these truths throughout the week, moving from the "medical debt" of our sin to the "signed blank check" of God’s extravagant grace.
Day 1: The Courage to Ask
📖 Scripture: Ruth 3:1–5; Hebrews 4:14–16
💡 Reflection: Ruth’s journey to the threshing floor began with a risky choice. She had seen the generosity of Boaz in the fields, but asking for marriage—and the full protection of a redeemer—was a far greater request. It is like having an insurmountable debt and knowing a wealthy benefactor exists; the tension lies in finding the courage to actually ask for help. Ruth’s boldness wasn't rooted in her own status as a "Moabite outsider," but in the known "worthy" character of Boaz. We often hesitate to bring our deepest needs to God, yet we are invited to draw near to the throne of grace with confidence, not because of our merit, but because of the character of our Great High Priest.
🙏 Prayer: Lord, give me the courage to bring my true needs to You today. Help me to trust Your character more than I fear my own inadequacy, and remind me that You invite me to ask for Your covering. Amen.
Day 2: Under the Redeemer’s Wing
📖 Scripture: Ruth 3:7–9; Psalm 36:7–9
💡 Reflection: When Ruth asked Boaz to "spread your wings over your servant," she was making a profound theological appeal. She used the same imagery Boaz used in chapter 2 to describe God’s protection—asking Boaz to be the physical answer to his own prayer for her. This wasn't a move of seduction, but a bold request for a covenant covering. In our spiritual lives, we often try to find "cover" in our own efforts or the world’s security. Ruth reminds us that true "rest" is only found when we surrender our lives to the wings of our True Redeemer, Jesus Christ, who spreads His righteousness over us.
🙏 Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for the refuge found under Your wings. I confess that I often try to provide my own protection. Today, I rest in the covering of Christ’s righteousness alone. Amen.
Day 3: The Path of Integrity
📖 Scripture: Ruth 3:10–13; Titus 2:11–14
💡 Reflection: The midnight encounter at the threshing floor was filled with tension and the potential for scandal. In a culture where Moabites were known for temptation and unfaithfulness, Ruth and Boaz both chose a different path. Ruth chose a bold proposal over easy seduction, and Boaz chose legal integrity over taking advantage of a vulnerable woman. They were challenged to choose the "easy path of the flesh" or the "godly path of integrity," and they chose godliness. Our lives are filled with similar crossroads every week. Because our Redeemer chose the hard path of the cross to save us, we are empowered to choose the path of holiness in our daily decisions.
🙏 Prayer: Lord, strengthen me to choose the path of godliness today, even when the easy path of the world seems more enticing. May my integrity be a witness to the redeeming work You have done in my heart. Amen.
Day 4: A Kindness That Does Not Rest
📖 Scripture: Ruth 3:14–18; Philippians 1:3–6
💡 Reflection: Naomi’s confidence at the end of the chapter is striking: "the man will not rest but will settle the matter today". Boaz’s gift of six measures of barley was a "down payment" of hope, signaling that he was already at work on Ruth’s behalf. We often feel anxious in the "waiting rooms" of life, wondering if the plot of our story will ever resolve. But like Boaz, our Redeemer is persistently working. Christ did not rest until our redemption was secured on the cross, and He will not rest until His work in us is brought to completion.
🙏 Prayer: Sovereign God, help me to "sit still" and trust You in the middle of my unresolved stories. Thank You that You are persistently working for my good and Your glory, and that You will not rest until Your purposes are fulfilled. Amen.
Day 5: The "Worthy" Redeemer
📖 Scripture: Ruth 3:10–11; Revelation 5:1–10
💡 Reflection: Throughout the story, Boaz is described as a "worthy man" and Ruth as a "worthy woman". Their worthiness wasn't about perfection, but about their hesed—their steadfast, covenantal love for others. Boaz’s willingness to redeem Ruth—even when he had no legal obligation—points us toward the ultimate "Worthy One". In Revelation, only the Lamb is found worthy to open the scrolls of history. We approach our Redeemer not because we have proven our worth, but because He has proven His. His kindness goes "above and beyond" what we could ever glean for ourselves.
🙏 Prayer: Lord Jesus, You alone are worthy of all praise. Thank You for being the Redeemer who sees my poverty and invites me to Your table. May I live this day in the joy and security of Your "above and beyond" grace. Amen.
