Niger Mission Trip Update #3

More updates and blessings from Africa!

Yesterday, we attended a local church for Sunday worship. The service started at 9:00 and ended at 11:50. All the members were excited to enter and praise! The first hour was praise and worship, with the kids' choir, junior choir, and women's choir.

Hello again from Africa!

Most things have stayed the same. We have everything unpacked and set up for surgery next week. Unfortunately, the power supply has not been cooperating with us. The whole building needed to be rewired to meet American electrical standards. This was mostly completed by the time we arrived, but by the time we had everything ready to plug in, the power grid was too unstable to power up 14 plus machines that the clinic has.

Greetings from Africa!

We spent the majority of the first three days traveling to Africa. We left on Friday and finally arrived on Monday morning. We were blessed to attend Easter Sunday services in Niger, and they asked us to serve the sacraments to the congregation. We arrived at the church building at 9:30, and the service ended at 11:50. There was a lot of praise and worship, dancing, testimonies, and a Profession of Faith. Many rejoiced because it was Sunday, and they could attend church!

Friday, February 16

We spent part of Friday morning and part of the afternoon with the En-Gedi children.

Our usual routine when spending time with them was to put our aprons on and greet the kids who could communicate. Then, each of us spent a few minutes with the immobile, non-communicative children, talking to and touching them, trying to coax some smiles, giggles, or other responses.

We spent much of the day with the En-Gedi kids. We played with large Lego blocks, sang songs (and made up some new, silly verses), and tickled some toes that peeked out of socks. Some of the older children seemed to be in a silly mood! One untied Karen's apron strings when she turned her back to him.

What a joy it was to hear their belly laughs and listen to them singing praises to our God, each in his or her own special way!

We ate an early breakfast and were on our way back to Kitengela by 8 am. We arrived at En-Gedi around 1:30 pm, grateful to be back.

Following a good, hearty lunch, we carried our bags to our rooms, unpacked, and rested for a while.

After a buffet breakfast on Sunday and Monday mornings, our safari driver, Sammy, picked us up, and we entered Amboseli National Park. We were blessed and excited to see hundreds of African elephants, zebras, pink flamingos, and Thompson’s and Grant’s Gazelles. Small groups of warthogs, monkeys, baboons, ostriches, hippos, and a cheetah were among the other animals we saw.

Mid-morning on Sunday, we stopped at a resort for snacks, refreshments, and cooling down. Brenda carried a small bag of potato chips as we walked from our safari vehicle. Several baboons and monkeys were nearby; some mothers held and carried tiny babies. We watched them for a bit. Suddenly, a monkey came out of nowhere, ran toward Brenda, grabbed her bag of potato chips, and climbed into the trees! Brenda squealed, and every monkey and baboon in the area chased after the monkey and chips! Tree leaves flew, and a lot of chattering followed! It all happened in the blink of an eye! Oh, what we’d give to have captured it on video!

After a quick breakfast, our bags were loaded into a safari vehicle, and Margaret and I headed to the Centrim Amboseli Lodge, a five-hour drive from the Tanzanian border and Amboseli National Park.

As you can imagine, five coffee-drinking women needed a restroom break a few hours down the road. It just so happened that the place we stopped sold African items hand-made by talented local crafters. We shopped, bartered, had refreshments, and were on our way again.

As we neared our resort, Mt. Kilimanjaro became clearer and clearer! We did not know we’d be privileged to see this beautiful, famous mountain, the tallest, stand-alone mountain in Africa!

We praised God for a restful night and enjoyed another delicious breakfast prepared by our cook, Rose. We are thoroughly enjoying the fresh fruits grown at En-Gedi or nearby farms!

We heard last night that three or four En-Gedi kids had fevers and were not feeling well. A few became sick with vomiting and diarrhea during the night. A few of us ladies also felt a little “off.” We decided it would be in everyone’s best interest not to visit the En-Gedi kids today. Instead, the four of us enjoyed coffee and devotions together outdoors.

The En-Gedi kids received physical therapy this morning (Thursday, February 9), so Margaret Njuguna drove us through Kitengela to a shopping center. Along the way, we saw many fresh fruit and vegetable stands and other stands selling different foods and wares, like clothing, furniture, plants, etc. People walked along the roadsides, some carrying goods like bananas and potato chips on their heads to sell.

We slept well and were fed a delicious breakfast of eggs, sausages, toast, and more delicious fresh fruit - mostly grown here at En-Gedi! There are mango, avocado, passion fruit, guava, loquat, casava, lemon, orange, papaya, and banana trees growing here, as well as lemongrass, kale, sweet potatoes, spinach, onions, sugar cane, and corn. We genuinely enjoy the Kenyan COFFEE - what a blessing!

We checked in at the Sioux Falls airport and got through security without problems or delays. We proceeded to our gate. We met TJ (see photo below) at our gate at Sioux Falls airport. He had been in Sioux Falls for a week-long Christian men's retreat. This man was ON FIRE for the Lord and couldn't stop talking about what God has recently done in his life!

He had been in the Marines and had used drugs for the past 15-18 years, living in Atlanta, GA. He felt God calling him to leave everything behind and go to Cleveland, OH. He wondered what God had in store for him, but he went. He found temporary lodging in a lovely home through Christian people and organizations. It was there that he met his wife. He is open to doing whatever God calls him to do!

Today, we visited the MKA Ministries Children’s School in Hosanna. The school wasn’t very far from where we were staying, so it didn’t take long to get there.

When we arrived, I walked around the front of the van and was greeted with a hero’s welcome. I was very confused and figured they were doing this for our whole group. Samuel must have read the look on my face because he told me, “This is for you.”

On Monday morning, Samuel and I met up at 5:45 a.m. and got a ride to the Addis Ababa Airport. It was a very short drive, and we were dropped off a little before 6:00 a.m. We had to get through security to get to ticketing and get our boarding passes. After printing our boarding passes, we had to go through security again. I commented that this was strange, and Samuel told me that when we go home on Thursday, we will have to go through security four times.

It is my eighth day on the other side of the world, and I still wake up each morning and have to remind myself where I am. The plan for this day is only church and preparing to depart early tomorrow. We will only be gone for two nights, so we will not take all our luggage. There is a special storage location where we will keep most of our belongings while we are gone.

It has been a few days since an update. Thursday was a good day in class, finishing up discussing preaching Christ from the Psalms and Wisdom literature. Before moving on to Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Song of Solomon, I had some good quotes from the book “War Psalms of the Prince of Peace” on the imprecatory Psalms to clarify our discussion the previous day. A big theme in Proverbs and Ecclesiastes is that there isn’t much gospel in them. I emphasized that any time we see the law in Proverbs, we will see our inability.

Today was less busy than the previous two days, which was a welcome change. A third day of teaching for more than four hours requires me to rest and prepare for finishing the week with the seminarians.

The morning session had the students sharing their discussions from Tuesday then we looked the Old Testament Law and History books. Some of the stories we discussed were the Ten Plagues in Egypt, the crossing of the Red Sea, Manna, and the water from the rock.

Another day of classes with the seminarians is in the books. We had an excellent time together discussing “What Christ-centered preaching looks like?” and “Proclaiming Christ in Genesis.” The engagement with the content I was teaching was encouraging, and I look forward to our journey through other parts of scripture in the coming days.

The most interesting part of the day was our trip to MKA’s Homeless Outreach.

Another good day on the other side of the world. Every morning, I wake up baffled at the fact that I’m in Africa.

Today was the first day of the class I am teaching. We are considering how to “Preach Christ from All of Scripture.” The students had to come from various distances on the first day, so we weren’t too concerned with getting there on time. We arrived at the church around 9:15 and tried to address some technical hiccups. There is no Wi-Fi at the church, so we needed to use a 4G portable hotspot to connect with a student in North Africa.

Today was the day the adventure really began. I was blessed to preach at a small church here in Addis Ababa. Pastor Bahru, who works for MKA Ministries, picked me up around 11, and we made our way through the city.

There is so much to see for someone who is used to a rural setting. As we drove, I saw everything from upscale clothing to people selling plastic stools on the side of the street.
